You may want to consider dental implants as an option for tooth restoration. Our restorative dentists can use dental implants to restore a single tooth or multiple teeth. Let’s take a look at some frequently asked questions about dental implants so you can determine if this procedure is right for you.
“What Is a Dental Implant?”
A dental implant is a titanium rod inserted into the jawbone that functions like a natural tooth root. It later supports an abutment (a connecting element) and a dental crown. A single implant can replace a tooth, or multiple implants can replace multiple teeth, even supporting dental bridges or dentures.
“What Are Mini Dental Implants?”
The mini dental implant acts much like its full-sized counterpart, except it is smaller and less invasive. While the full-sized dental implants are between 3.4 and 5.8 millimeters in diameter, mini implants are just between 1.8 and 3.3 millimeters.
The difference in size means you don’t have to have as much healthy jawbone tissue to be a candidate for implants. The dental procedure to get mini dental implants only takes one visit to our office, which means you can go home the same day with your new tooth replacement.
“What Happens During Dental Implant Surgery?”
During the dental implant procedure, a titanium rod is inserted into your jawbone. You will then need to wait several months for the implant to successfully fuse to your jawbone in a process called osseointegration.
Several months later, you will come back to have an abutment screwed into the implant. The abutment acts like a post to help support the dental implant crown, which finally restores the look and function of your tooth.
“Who Is Eligible for Dental Implants?
To be a candidate for dental implants, you will need healthy jawbone tissue and a strong immune system. If you don’t have sufficient jawbone tissue for the procedure then our dentists may recommend a bone graft to add more tissue. Otherwise, we may recommend a mini dental implant instead.
“Why Should I Get Dental Implants?”
Unlike dentures, dental implants look and feel like natural teeth. Dental implants also stimulate jawbone tissue so you can avoid further tooth loss.
Many patients appreciate that they can continue eating their favorite foods after the tooth implant procedure. Having dental implants also helps improve self-esteem, so you can smile with confidence after tooth loss.
“What Factors Affect the Cost of Dental Implants?”
The cost of dental implants is affected by the number of teeth you wish to replace and the condition of your jawbone.
A dental implant won’t be able to fuse to jawbone tissue that is too weak or soft, which is why our dentists may recommend a bone graft. Keep in mind that a bone graft will lengthen your overall treatment time and cost.
“How Do I Care for Dental Implants?”
Take care of your dental implants like you would take care of your natural teeth. This means brushing your teeth twice a day and flossing daily. You should also make sure to see our dentists for routine teeth cleanings at least every six months.
